2nd Class News!

It has been another busy term in rang a dó.  We returned after the Christmas holidays with heavy hearts as we bid a fond farewell to our much loved principal, MS. O’Halloran. Ar dheis dé go raibh a hanam dilís. We will carry the incredible person that she was in our hearts forever as we continue to learn, work and play in her honour.

January was all about Space. We learned all about the solar system and the planets. We designed and created our very own rockets using recycled materials. We carried out experiments and attempted to launch our very own rocket using vinegar and baking soda. While it did work, we were slightly disappointed at the distance it travelled! 😊  ! We designed and created our own planets, did lots of writing all about our favourite planets and used the iPads to research all about space even getting a look inside a rocket and listening to some very interesting astronauts describing their lives.

We learned all about the ever present global warming and the effects it is having on our planet. We were interested to learn what we can all do to slow down the effects on our planet.  We learned all about endangered animals and the impact global warming is having on their habitats. We love using the ipads for research and found learning about orcas fascinating! Continuing on the theme of saving our planet, we had great fun participating in the Green Schools Art Competition and enjoyed coming up with slogans & posters to remind us to think about how we travel and the impact it has on our earth.

We celebrated World Book Day by attending a very enjoyable Zoom meeting with the legendary author ‘Sarah Webb’ who told us all about her inspiration and how she became an author. We designed and created our own book covers and bought lots of new reading material with our World Book Day vouchers.

We have been working so hard on our maths every day as we get to grips with & practice our new skills like renaming, regrouping and working with bigger numbers. We’ve also been working hard on telling the time and are getting very good at it too! We have also been practicing using money and enjoyed playing shop together.

Valentine’s day & St. Patrick’s Day was much anticipated as we created beautiful art. We were thrilled to meet up together as a whole school community on our Green day which was held in the hall. Each class performed as Gaeilge to coincide with Féile an Aonaigh and Seachtain Na Gaeilge. Rinneamar póstaeir faoi ‘Shean fhocail’ agus bhaineamar an taitneamh as Comórtas Féile an Aonaigh.

We continue to be active every day as we are participating in the ‘Run Around Ireland and ‘Climb The Peaks’ Active School challenges. This we are thoroughly enjoying skipping, running and hopping counting each step as we strive to reach our goals. We are so lucky that Conor our hurling coach is back to us every Monday and we had fantastic fun with Rody who taught us gymnastics.

March was a special month in rang a dó as we prepared for and celebrated our First Reconciliation, It was a beautiful ceremony and the children did themselves proud! As the Easter holidays approached, we were busy painting and making lots of beautiful Easter art. Our student teacher Ms.Murphy showed us how to make cute little sock bunnies, we really enjoyed making these and were very happy with our results!  On the day before the holidays we celebrated Ms. O’Halloran’s life and dedication to our school with a beautiful school mass in her honour, the children’s participation and singing led by Ms.Boland & Ms.Comer was outstanding. The children did themselves and the whole school community very proud. Wishing everyone a safe and peaceful Easter from all in rang a dó.
