Spring in Senior Infants!

February saw the arrival of Spring in Senior Infants, and we celebrated this by creating our very own St. Brigid’s Cloak and colouring some lovely St. Brigid’s Crosses; they turned out just beautiful! Chatting about the Season of Spring in Maths allowed us to notice what was happening in nature too; buds starting to appear on trees, daffodils and snowdrops starting to blossom, baby animals being born etc. The mornings are also beginning to get a bit brighter, so this makes it a tiny bit easier to get-up for school in the mornings!

Aistear allowed us to continue exploring the topic of “The Estate Agents”, and Senior Infants certainly got into their stride here after a while; they drew houses themselves and decided to put them on display for everybody to see (like an Estate Agents’ window). Well done Seniors, great idea! They also worked in small groups to build their own ‘Dream Homes’ using blocks, bricks etc.

Art this term gave us the opportunity to create some pieces for Valentine’s Day, including a Card and a Moon. We also made some special bits and bobs to honour the special mammies/grannies/godmothers/aunties for “Mother’s Day” – a teapot (with the all important teabag attached!), a finger-print bookmark and picture and some paper flowers (luckily we got these done before the lockdown came into being). Fish bowls and Birds’ nests are also on display around our colourful classroom at the moment!

Music time gave us the chance to learn the beautiful song, “Can’t Help Falling in Love with You”, while in Gaeilge we also learned some poems and stories to mark ‘Seachtain na Gaeilge’. Yoga with Siobhán was a new activity introduced to us this term, and it gave us a space to breathe, relax and chill for 30 minutes on a Tuesday during an, otherwise, fun, busy and hectic Senior Infant week!

We also had an efficient ‘Supermarket’ and ‘Garden Centre’ operating from the comfort of our own classroom (Aistear). Our writing in the cursive format is really coming on, and we are now very good at Sequencing and telling the time in one hour intervals (Maths). SESE allowed us to plant some flower bulbs, and also to work in small groups to build towers using various materials, e.g. foam blocks, bottle caps, plastic cups, lollipop sticks etc.

Of course, we also tasted some delicious pancakes in February, and listened to the wonderful story, “The Runaway Pancake” as we ate! Lent began on Ash Wednesday, and we attended Mass and had ashes placed on our foreheads. We also had a visit from Sr. Essie, who was impressed with the children’s knowledge on Parables and Miracles, St. Brigid, and their fabulous singing.

Unfortunately, normality came to an abrupt end on March 12th when all schools closed, but we definitely had lots of fun in Senior Infants up until then, and made memories that we will have forever!
